Apple analyst Guo Minghao from Tianfeng International has brought the latest forecast report on the iPhone. He believes that Apple's patent settlement with Qualcomm and a six-year license agreement means that the new 2H20 iPhone (also known as 2020) will support 5G, and Qualcomm and Samsung are potential suppliers of 5G baseband chips.

The report believes that as Intel withdraws from the 5G baseband chip market, concerns about whether the 2020 iPhone can support 5G are completely removed. In order to reduce supply risks and costs and increase bargaining power, Apple will use both 5G baseband chip solutions from Qualcomm and Samsung, and the two products will correspond to the mmWave (millimeter wave) market and the Sub-6GHz market respectively.

In terms of shipments, the report believes that the 5G version of the iPhone will drive demand for high-end models in the second half of 2020: "We expect total iPhone shipments from 2019 to 2020 to be approximately 1.88 to 192 million and 1.95% to 200 million units, respectively. We believe that benefiting from operators' increased 5G model subsidies, shipments of high-end 5G iPhone models are expected to increase in 2020. It is expected that the new 2019 iPhone and 2020 iPhone shipments will reach 650-70 million in 2019 and 2020, respectively. 7,000 ~ 75 million."

With the official settlement between Apple and Qualcomm and Intel's out of the 5G baseband chip market, the 5G version of the iPhone is getting closer and closer to us. If Guo’s predictions come true, Samsung will replace Intel as the second supplier of iPhone’s baseband chips. This is indeed good news for Apple. Adding a supplier can not only provide guarantees for smooth shipments, but also Although Samsung's influence on the 5G chip is temporarily lacking, its existence will also restrict Qualcomm to a certain extent. It depends on whether Samsung is willing to seize this opportunity and cooperate with Apple on the 5G baseband chip.
