The second generation cloud-based AI chip was introduced in Cambrian, and its performance was improved four times by 16 nm technology.

Leifeng News, June 20, 2019, Cambrian announced the launch of the second generation cloud AI chip Siyuan 270 (MLU270) and board products, the goal is to provide faster, lower power consumption, cost-effective AI acceleration solutions.

It is reported that Siyuan 270 chip is manufactured by TSMC 16nm process, and its board products can be rapidly deployed in servers and workstations through PCIe interface. The open Siyuan 270 board products in Cambrian are oriented to artificial intelligence inference task, and have inference performance over 1000fps on ResNet50. MLU270-S4 board (half-high and half-long) is deployed to data center, integrating 16GB DDR4 memory to support ECC; MLU270-F4 board (full height and full length) adopts active heat dissipation design, and is oriented to non-data center deployment scenarios, integrating 16GB DDR4 memory to support ECC. SIYUAN 270 training board products for AI training tasks will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year.


SIYUAN 270 adopts MULV02 instruction set independently developed by Cambrian Company. It can support highly diversified AI applications such as vision, voice, natural language processing and traditional machine learning. It also integrates abundant video and image codec hardware units for visual applications. The theoretical peak performance of SIYUAN 270 chip in dealing with non-sparse deep learning model has been improved 4 times to 128 TOPS (INT8) of the previous generation MLU100. It is compatible with both INT4 and INT16 operations, with theoretical peak values reaching 256 TOPS and 64 TOPS respectively. It supports floating-point and mixed-precision operations.


Officials say that Cambrian has achieved a key breakthrough in the field of fixed-point training. The SIYUAN 270 board will provide excellent AI training performance through 8-bit or 16-bit fixed-point operation. This technology is expected to become an important milestone in the development of AI chips. In terms of system software and tool chain, SIYUAN 270 continues to support the Cambrian Neuware software tool chain and mainstream programming frameworks in the industry. In addition, in order to facilitate developers to better tap the super computing power of Siyuan 270 and explore more application areas, Cambrian will open up special programming languages to communities and developers in the near future.


Cambrian AI processors have been shipped on a large scale in smartphones. In cloud products, Cambrian launched the first generation of cloud AI chip MLU100 and card in May 2018. MLU100 series products have provided customers with high energy efficiency solutions in intelligent video analysis, voice synthesis, recommendation engine, AI cloud and other fields.
