With industry-leading speed and energy efficiency, Samsung's new mobile DRAM enables next-generation flagship smartphones to take full advantage of 5G and AI features such as ultra-high-definition video recording and machine learning while dramatically extending battery life.
At a data rate of 5500 Mb/s, the 12Gb LPDDR5 is about 1.3 times better than the previous generation of mobile memory (LPDDR4X @ 4266 Mb/s).
Taking a 12GB content creation application as an example, LPDDR5 can transfer 44GB of data in one second, equivalent to 12 full HD (3.7GB size) movies.
In addition, combined with new circuit design, enhanced clocking, training and low power consumption, the new chip can achieve an energy efficiency ratio of 30% lower than the previous generation. Even at extremely fast transfer rates, long-term stability of performance is ensured.
Finally, in order to manage capacity more flexibly, Samsung is considering moving its 12Gb LPDDR5 production to its Pyeongtaek campus in South Korea starting next year, depending on the product needs of customers around the world.
Following the 12Gb LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, Samsung expects to develop 16Gb LPDDR5 next year to consolidate its competitive edge in the global memory market.
