DeepMind losses widened to 470.2 million pounds ($572 million) in 2018 from 302.2 million pounds in 2017, while revenue rose to 102.8 million pounds from 54.4 million pounds in the same period. But the company's operating staff costs also doubled from a year earlier to £398 million in 2018.

The company's debt maturing this year is 1.04 billion pounds, including a £883 million loan from its owner. DeepMind has pledged in writing that it will receive financial support for at least a year.

The company spokesman did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

In 2014, Alphabet bought DeepMind for 400 million. The following year, the company began to work on health care research and eventually established a department specializing in the field.
