The "Tag Recommendations" feature uses face recognition technology to advise users to tag friends in photos, but this feature has been at the center of privacy-related litigation since 2015. The Illinois user filed the lawsuit alleging that Facebook violated the state's "Biometry Information Privacy Act", claiming that the social media company illegally collected and stored hundreds of them without consent. Biometric data for 10,000 users.

Facebook then filed a petition with a federal appeals court, hoping that the court would revoke the class action, but the court rejected the request last month.

“We have been revealing our use of face recognition technology, and users can turn it on or off at any time,” Facebook said last month.

Facebook said the company will continue to engage with privacy experts, academics, regulators and users to research how to use face recognition technology and user control options.
