Chinese scholars have found new technologies that can rapidly treat antibiotic residue contamination

Wastewater discharged from hospitals, pharmaceutical industries and aquaculture often contains a lot of antibiotic residues. If these wastewater is discharged directly without treatment, it will seriously affect the ecological balance and threaten human health. Plasma is considered to be the "fourth state" of substances other than solid, liquid and gas. In recent years, plasma has shown broad application prospects in many fields, such as industry, agriculture, biomedicine and so on.

Huang Qing, in cooperation with the enterprise, put forward a scheme of using plasma biotechnology to treat wastewater and degrade antibiotics. Recently, they took norfloxacin as an example to study deeply. It was found that ozone produced by plasma could defluorinate norfloxacin, resulting in the breaking of carboxy group and quinolone group in norfloxacin. The experimental results show that the high efficiency and rapid degradation of norfloxacin can be realized, and the technology has the effect on the degradation of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, doxycycline and other antibiotics.

According to reports, this treatment technology is simple, easy to operate, low cost and no secondary pollution. It has been successfully applied to more than 40 sewage treatment cases. It is of great significance to develop new practical medical and aquaculture wastewater treatment technologies.
