Products: Netease Science and Technology "To the Forward" column
On September 12, Netease Technology and Yang Lan jointly launched the second issue of the program "To the Forward", "Chips in China, where is the way? 》 Official launch. Yang Lan talked with Professor Wei Shaojun, Chairman of the Institute of Microelectronics of Tsinghua University, and Mr Zhao Weiguo, Chairman of Ziguang Group, to discuss the development of chips in China. Wei Shaojun, Zhao Weiguo and Yang Lan discussed in depth how to develop chips independently and controllably, whether mergers and acquisitions are effective means, and how to solve the problem of talent.
Behind the huge imports of US$312 billion: Should we be open or independent?
According to a report from the State Customs, China imported more than $312 billion of chips last year, equivalent to the total imports of oil, steel and grain. For a time, the industry was uproarious.
We have read the crisis from the numbers, and many doubts have arisen: What does this set of numbers mean? Why do Chinese chips need to be imported so much? Once the chip is out of supply, will the relevant information industry stop? Can the chip field be fully autonomous and controllable?
A series of questions were thrown into the air.
In NetEase's "to the Frontier" program, Wei Shaojun, Zhao Weiguo and Yang Lan are
Wei Shaojun explained that, on the other hand, global chip production was about 468.8 billion US dollars last year, and China imported 312 billion US dollars, accounting for 2/3. Of the imported chips, more than 158 billion US dollars (1/3 of the total imports) were used locally in China, and about 160 billion US dollars (2/3) of chips were installed in the whole machine and exported again. Meanwhile, China produces about $37 billion of chips a year.
Behind the 312 billion figure, on the one hand, China is an irreplaceable part of the globalization of the global information industry, on the other hand, it shows that China is heavily dependent on chips. Zhao Weiguo said in an interview with NetEase that this is both an opportunity and a crisis for Chinese integrated circuit companies.
How should the Chinese chip industry develop? Do you need to achieve complete
Wei Shaojun believes that under the current environment, the development of China's chip industry needs to haveOn the one hand, we should vigorously develop our own chip industry, on the other hand, we should continue to open up and cooperate. He believes that the history of locking up countries proves that self-closure means backwardness and retrogression. Only by integrating into globalization, making more friends, opening up and cooperating, can the road become wider and wider.
In the view of Wei Shaojun, the integrated circuit industry chain is long and complex, does not need all the links, we all do, and some links can only master the core technology. As an entrepreneur, Zhao Weiguo also made a similar point of view:
How to become a powerful chip country? Can rapid development depend on buying?
The history of chips is only 60 years, but the development of chips industry in China is tortuous and bumpy.
In 1958, the world's first integrated circuit was born. In 1965, China's first integrated circuit came out. At that time, the gap between us and the world was only seven years. After ten years of turmoil, China's integrated circuit industry closed its doors and widened the gap with the world's advanced level.
After the reform and opening up in 1978, the development of chip industry has entered a new period.
Early Development of Chips in China
In the process of constantly groping, Wei Shaojun, as a generation of chip people, has successfully developed it, in the eyes of many people.
After 2000, there was also an important strategic shift in China's chip industry, Wei Shaojun said in "to the Frontier." at that time, he began to move from
After 2014, the development of integrated circuits in China has entered a new stage. In 2014, the State Council promulgated the National Integrated Circuit Industry Development Promotion Program. In the same year, the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund was established, with the scale of the fund reaching 125 billion yuan. China's integrated circuit development has changed from a state-led to a form of joint efforts by the state and private capital.
Should China's chip industry develop? Can R&D be bought? There has been a long-standing debate in the chip industry about whether to develop independently or buy-in.
Ziguang is an enterprise on the verge of bankruptcy in 2009. Zhao Weiguo became president of Ziguang in 2009, and began to make mergers and acquisitions in 2013. In July 2013, $1.78 billion was acquired for mobile phone chip company Exhibition News, and in July 2014, $907 million was acquired for Radio Frequency Chip Company Redico, which later took a 51% stake in Xinhua.
The speed and decisiveness of the rhythm have aroused many controversies: can the development of chips in China be operated by capital?
Zhao Weiguo directly questioned that Ziguang acquired complete team, technology and even market through mergers and acquisitions in the early stage of development, mainly in order to save time and improve efficiency by paying more money.
At present, Ziguang has ranked among the top three, 5G and other special chips in the field of communication chips in the world. It catches up with the storage chips. The Yangtze River Storage of Ziguang Group announced that it will produce 64-layer 256GbTLC 3D NAND flash memory based on Xtacking architecture in September.
Chip Industry Needs Long Term Doctrine
The importance of integrated circuit industry is self-evident. In Wei Shaojun's words, this industry will continue to develop for decades or even hundreds of years, with great promise.
When is the Chinese chip industry a powerful country? Wei Shaojun gave a standard:
At present, the development of integrated circuits in China is still in its early stages.
Moreover, chip is an industry with high technology threshold, long R & D cycle and longer return on investment cycle.
Wei Shaojun appealed that in the IC industry, how good the product technology is, how many people praise it and what awards it has received are totally unacknowledged. What we admit is how much it has been sold in the market and how many heroes we can talk about in the market.
Zhao Weiguo also takes it for granted. He believes that the first reason for the emergence of integrated circuits in China today is the lack of talents. The second reason is the insufficient investment. A smallest chip design company is also investing hundreds of millions of dollars. If it comes to more advanced manufacturing, a factory will be 10 billion dollars.
Among them, the talent problem has become a spark, which tests the strength and endurance of Chinese chips.
At present, China's chip industry has 400,000 employees, and there are more than 300,000 gaps. How to make up for this gap in the future and how fast to make up for it are the most pragmatic issues before you.
Wei Shaojun is in the academic circle, and the serious problem is serious,
He talked about the unreasonable phenomena in the industry. It is not advisable for every family to solve the problem of shortage of talents by digging people. The wages have been raised. However, the overall quality of employees has not been improved. In the long run, it is impossible to solve the demand by digging people and moving people. Therefore, it is essential to improve the supply.
Wei Shaojun suggested that we first encourage a group of people who are not engaged in integrated circuits to transform into the integrated circuit industry, and increase the on-the-job training of enterprises, so that they can meet the current needs by upgrading the technical level of the on-the-job personnel.
The decentralization of human resources also deserves our attention.
Zhao Weiguo said bluntly:
Chinese chips need patience, long-term doctrine, down-to-earth and openness.
