On the afternoon of the 20th, the sub-forum "Counting Aging Society: Transformation and Innovation" was held. The aging society is the inevitable result of the development of modernization as well as the basic condition for the future development. The impact of the aging society on human economy, society, politics and culture will increasingly exceed people's understanding and imagination. As far as China is concerned, the aging society is accompanied by informationization, urbanization and globalization, with greater challenges and opportunities.
Dou Ruigang, executive secretary-general of Tencent Public Welfare Charity Foundation and a member of the 30-member Forum on Aging Society, attended and delivered a speech on the theme "bridging the intergenerational divide of Digital Technology in the context of an Aging Society."
How to bridge the intergenerational divide of digital science and technology under the background of aging? Dou Ruigang put forward three suggestions: first, the digital science and technology divide is essentially the intergenerational gap between the hearts of the people, and increasing the young people's understanding of aging and "empathy" is the key; second, returning to the family, teaching the elderly science and technology feedback as a solution; third, promoting science and technology to be good, science and technology to help the elderly.
Following is the transcript of the speech:
The old man's gone bad or the bad guy's getting old?! In recent years, on the back of the discussion on the old of the bad people, the generation gap brought by the digital science and technology in the background of the aging society has been reflected to some extent, and the old people in the new media age have become the party in the mainstream discourse. The new media, in a sense, stripped the old man's voice and made a joke and discriminated against an old man's position.
American scholars Prinsky and Fryer have classified human beings in the digital age according to their age: young people are the "digital aborigines" leading the tide, middle-aged people are the "digital immigrants", while the elderly are the "digital refugees" who are rejected.
China's Internet survey of China's Internet Information Center in June shows that more than 850 million Chinese Internet users, including 65.1% of the 10-30-year-old Internet users, 17.3% of the 40-49-year-old, and 13.6% above the age of 50, reach 100 million people, according to the scale, The internet is indeed the world of young people. In fact, before 2012, the online rate of the elderly is lower, and it has never exceeded 5%, but with the development of the mobile Internet, the digital process of the old people has made a great breakthrough, which has increased to 16.6% in 2017.
The emergence of mobile Internet has promoted the contact of elderly groups in a sense, in which WeChat has become the "entry-level application" of the mobile era, and has also become the starting point of many elderly "touching the net". Tencent Research Institute and Shenzhen University have done a research report called WeChat Life and Family WeChat feedback for the elderly, which has some interesting findings that I can share with you.
First, the emergence of WeChat has promoted the Internet access of the elderly. WeChat social, information and other functions are very practical, and the operation is relatively simple. WeChat has become the first access to the Internet for older people with weak digital skills. WeChat has gradually become a "universal application". At present, the number of active users per month has reached nearly 1.1 billion, forming a black hole effect, which has also led to the participation of backward elderly people. WeChat data confirm this. In September 2016, the number of elderly active users over the age of 55 on WeChat reached 7.68 million, reaching 50 million by September 2017.
2. Family relationship is a very important reason to promote Wechat among the elderly. Overall, the social interaction and work activities of the elderly are gradually decreasing. Their core relationship is more focused on their families. The core life returns to the family. Family has become a particularly important scene of the elderly life. The Wechat family group is also the core place for the elderly to surf the Internet.
Third, the younger the age, the higher the income, the higher the educational level, the more likely the curious elderly will use WeChat. The older the elderly, the more accustomed they are to traditional radio, newspapers, televisionThey are reluctant to access new media, while younger people are more likely and more willing to access the Internet. Income can determine the material basis for older people to access Wechat, that is, intelligence.cellphoneAnd the cost of the Internet; and the level of education can affect the learning ability of the elderly and the willingness to accept new things; curiosity is that the old people become WeChat readers, there are also subjective factors-love to learn new things, the elderly who often participate in social activities tend to have more WeChat friends and use more WeChat functions. The elderly use WeChat more and more skillfully, they will add a lot of old classmates, old colleagues, old friends as friends, restart the original relationship network, so the number of friends is also more.
IV. The old man has the "triple jump" of using WeChat: the old people have obvious layering and social networking on the function of WeChat.
5. Older people who use Wechat tend to feel happier; and when the number of friends on the Wechat list increases, older people tend to feel happier. The use of Wechat can not only meet the needs of the elderly for information, but also alleviate their extreme social desire, reduce loneliness and enhance happiness. The more friends the elderly have, the more social interaction they have. Communication with other people can make the elderly feel self-efficacy, that is to say, they feel that they are "still useful" and that life becomes less boring and even more colorful, thus enhancing their subjective well-being.
How to bridge the intergenerational divide of digital science and technology under the background of aging?
First, the digital science and technology divide is essentially the intergenerational gap between the hearts of the people, and increasing young people's understanding of aging and empathy is the key. The process of aging, especially the limitations of physical aging, the ability to pick up new things, the decline in memory, some products that young people do not learn from themselves, the elderly may still learn to make mistakes many times; some content of very low quality to young people, the elderly tend to enjoy it. There is a need to look at the digital divide faced by the elderly as well as the social situation and life cycle in order to understand the aging process more deeply.
Second, returning to the family, teaching the elderly science and technology feedback as a solution
Families play an important role in influencing the use of technology by the elderly. Primary education is an important solution to help the elderly overcome the digital divide. For example, in the family, there is a special "back-feeding" behavior occurring. Parents (grandparents) often ask their children (grandchildren) how to use Wechat, and their children will take the initiative to teach their parents some functions. This kind of "digital feeding back" and "Weixin feeding back" from the category of "cultural feeding back" may become a "solution" to improve the digital living conditions of the elderly.
Chinese society generally attaches importance to the family, the close relationship between the family may become the original driving force of WeChat feedback, compared with other forms, the cost of spontaneous feedback in the family is also lower. This kind of "feedback" can improve the use literacy of parents and children at the same time; the deeper the degree of feedback, the more harmonious the family relationship. Through the path of "feedback", we not only see the possibility of improving the use of WeChat in the elderly, but also meet the core needs of the elderly-family and family interaction.
But in the process of feeding back, the most important thing is to promote the healthy aging and vitality aging of the elderly, to promote their confidence and curiosity in using technology products, and to use technology to build a healthier social connection. "Tell him how to use it, it's better to tell him he can do it" - renew the concept of "old". Old people are facing the limitations of cognitive decline and insufficient cultural level. Traditional social concepts also insist on "taking care of their old age" without encouraging development, resulting in many old people shrinking from new things and low self-efficacy. Therefore, feeding back is not only the level of ability, but also the level of mentality.
Intimate interaction is more important. "I don't have to learn WeChat, but I want to learn from you." one of the reasons many old people are willing to learn WeChat is to have more interaction with their children and grandchildren. To understand this, science and technology feed back as an opportunity to understand the elderly and communicate with them.
The younger generation taught the old people to learn to send a red package, but did not teach them how to choose the public. In the function of WeChat, the older people have the ability to get the back-to-back ranking of the older generation, such as the red package, the voice, the video chat, the voice chat and so on, but at the time of the release, the praise of the peer circle, the selection, the forwarding of the public number, etc. are more important than the content-based back-feeding.
"Encourage him to seek new things, but also accept his old age" - not only patience, we need to update the concept of "blindly protect the elderly, do not encourage their development"; on the other hand, we also need to understand that aging is a process that must happen, reflected in their repeated learning and forgetting, futile. Young people's impatience and irritability are mixed with fear that they will eventually grow old. In the process of feeding back, it is not only the patience and empathy of young people, but also their true acceptance of aging.
3. Promoting the development of science and technology to the good, making science and technology suitable for the aged and helping them with science and technology.
The arrival of the mobile Internet, as well as the development of artificial intelligence, has completely changed the way society operates, shaking the traditional life form, from communication, entertainment, and even trading, travel and so on. When new technology adds only one choice, we are free to choose, but when new technology replaces traditional tools, it is a denial of rights for those who do not have new skills. Therefore, this requires science and technology enterprises to adhere to the spirit of science and technology to do good, bear their responsibilities, on the one hand, science and technology products should be more "inclusive" and "forward-looking", especially to take into account the needs of the old. Traditionally, new technologies have been created by young people and mainly serve young people. With the exception of a few products designed specifically for the elderly, the elderly has always been the absent party in the field of vision of mainstream scientific and technological products. This single goal of serving young people is not only not friendly to other groups, but also self-limiting to the development of scientific and technological products as the population structure ages. Therefore, the science and technology industry should be integrated into the demands of more elderly, the beginning of product design, more inclusive to the population, but also a forward-looking embodiment.
At the same time, we should promote science and technology to help the elderly, launch more intelligent aging products, especially for the aging society, the elderly face two rigid needs, one is emotional needs, on the basis of intelligent speakers to further develop a companion chat robot can alleviate the emotional care needs of the elderly. On the other hand, nursing needs, disabled and retarded elderly care and care, is the most fundamental challenge of aging society, the future care robot, as well as intelligent care system can reduce the difficulty of care to a certain extent, improve the quality of care.
