First low temperature control chip released by Intel: code number horse ridge adopts 22nm Technology

Based on Intel 22 nm FinFET technology, Intel and qutech (jointly founded by Delft University of technology and National Academy of Applied Sciences of the Netherlands) jointly developed horse ridge. The control chip is manufactured in Intel.

Horse ridge is designed as an RF processor to control the qubits running in the refrigerator. Its programming instructions correspond to the operation of the basic qubits. These instructions will be converted into electromagnetic microwave pulses that can operate the qubit state.

Qubit, or qubit, is the unit of measurement of quantum information in quantum informatics. Traditional computers use 0 and 1, and quantum computers also use 0 and 1.

The horse ridge control chip, named after one of the coldest regions in Oregon, can work at a low temperature of about 4 Kelvin. Kelvin is only a little higher than absolute zero, and its low temperature almost stops the movement of atoms.

Absolute zero is the zero point defined by Kelvin temperature scale. 0k is about 273.15 degrees below the Celsius scale.

According to Intel, with horse ridge, Intel fundamentally simplifies the control electronics needed to run quantum systems. By using highly integrated system on chip (SOC) instead of large instruments, the system design will be simplified, and complex signal processing technology will be allowed to accelerate the setting time, improve the qubit performance, and enable the system to expand to more qubits efficiently.

In the competition to realize the function and potential of quantum computer, researchers pay more attention to the manufacturing of qubits and build test chips to prove that a few qubits running in the way of superposition can improve the computing power exponentially.

Quantum computers are expected to solve problems that traditional computers can't handle, because qubits can exist in many states at the same time. With the help of this quantum physics phenomenon, qubits can carry out a lot of calculations at the same time, thus greatly accelerating the speed of solving complex problems.
