MIT Media Lab and Google have jointly developed sensorsnaps, a small wireless sensor that can be installed with clothes.
This kind of small circular sensor can be installed on any part of the clothes, especially on the buttons. It is easy to use the electrostatic capacitive touch meter to detect the touch and the gyroscope to detect the rotation.
From the point of view of installation effect, the buttons with sensors and ordinary buttons do not look very different.

Sensorsnaps, with a body weight of 2.4G, a diameter of 19mm and a thickness of 9mm, is composed of nrf52832 and 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) loaded with ble module and 10mah lithium battery with a thickness of 2mm.

In the design, sensorsnaps has a customized 4-layer PCB, which is convenient to reduce the size as much as possible. At the same time, sensorsnaps uses nrf52832 chip as microcontroller and Bluetooth transceiver. In order to improve power consumption and data rate, it uses uVision ide of arm.
The sensorsnaps shell uses a form 2 SLA printer for printing. It can be connected to existing buttons by screws, and has been tested on cheap plastic buckle kits such as Amazon, which have the same effect.
The use of sensorsnaps is very simple. You can play music with a light touch. Double click to switch between volume and time modes. Rotate to adjust the volume. You can also capture the action of the arm when installed on the arm.
In addition to these basic functions, sensorsnaps also supports other functions. For example, in time mode, the rotary gesture will be used again for fast forward or rewind of audio.
Motion tracking can also provide body information for sports, medicine and gesture control devices. Traditionally, optical motion tracking needs to track reflection marks through multiple cameras. The 9-axis IMU greatly simplifies this process by connecting to different body parts. However, the IMU method is still very cumbersome and needs to be equipped with a special IMU package.
Now, you can install SensorSnaps into existing clothing to implement instant motion tracking, and the data received through the SensorSnaps connection will be sent to the computer for evaluation.
The network is connected with a central node and multiple peripheral nodes connected wirelessly to the computer through Bluetooth. In the experiment, Android phones and macbooks connected with the central node are used.
According to the research team, the power supply is a difficulty in the whole design. To keep the sensor snap small, the battery space should not account for a large proportion. In order to save power, data will be sent through Bluetooth only when gesture motion and other actions are detected.
