Early warning of earthquakes can save lives. Google today announced a new feature for Android devices that will help during the earthquake.google works with the u.s. geological survey (USGS) and the california governor's emergency services office (Cal OES) to send earthquake alerts directly to california Android equipment with ShakeAlert support.
Here's how the Android earthquake warning system works. All smartphones have tiny accelerometers that sense signals that an earthquake is likely to occur. If the phone detects something that it thinks might be an earthquake, it sends a signal to our earthquake detection server, along with a rough location where the wobble occurred. Then, the server will combine the information of many mobile phones to calculate whether there is an earthquake. Google will use this information to share a quick, accurate view of the affected areas on Google search.
