According to foreign media reports, turkey is the main course of most American Thanksgiving meals, but turkey side dishes can make the whole table full of anger. However, depending on where people live, this holiday menu may look very different. The career advice website Zippia analyzed Google search results and came up with the most popular side dishes in the 50 states mostly traditional dishes, but some unexpected.
So what's the most popular choice? Mashed potatoes topped the list of searches in 10 states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin). Many other dishes with high search volume also have very high starch content. The six states (Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia) and the District of Columbia have the most frequent searches for macaroni and cheese, all of which are located on the east coast.
The most interesting part, though, is what's off the list. Obviously, the Thanksgiving dinner offered in Maine is something nutritionists would agree with, because "side salad" is the most popular search there. Indiana is deviled eggs, Alaska is hash brown casserole.
Most of the rest is fairly standard because it's based on popular searches rather than state specific searches.
It is reported that the site analyzed the trend of Google in November 2019, so the data is based on last year's Thanksgiving menu. Zippia studied data on 20 classic dishes, so less unusual dishes were not counted.
