The Department of Youth Rights and Welfare of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the China Internet Network Information Center jointly released a 2021 Research report on Internet Use among minors in China.
A survey of minors' Internet use found thatThe top three online purposes of minors are to study online, listen to music, play gamesChatting ranked fourth and watching short videos fifth. These five activities accounted for 88.9 per cent, 63 per cent, 62.3 per cent, 53.4 per cent and 47.6 per cent respectively.
It can be seen from the report that the supervision of Internet platforms has achieved initial results. In 2021, the proportion of underage netizens who often listen to music, play games, watch videos, watch short videos, watch live broadcasts on the Internet, and participate in online fan support will decrease to varying degrees compared with that in 2020.
According to the report, the number of underage netizens in China will reach 191 million in 2021, and the Internet penetration rate among minors will reach 96.8 percent.
In terms of Internet access for urban and rural minors, 96.7 percent of urban minors and 97.3 percent of rural minors will have access to the Internet in 2021. In primary school, the Internet penetration rate of urban minors is 0.8 percentage points higher than that in rural areas, and from junior middle school, the Internet penetration rate of rural minors is slightly higher than that in urban areas.
In addition, the trend of minors accessing the Internet at a younger age is obvious. The Internet penetration rate among primary school students will reach 95.0 percent in 2021, 2.9 percentage points higher than in 2020. Among underage netizens, 90.7 percent use mobile phones to access the Internet.
