Revenue was $52.7 billion, up 2 percent from $51.7 billion a year earlier.

Total cost of revenue was $17.488 billion, compared with $16.960 billion in the same period last year.

Gross profit was $35.259 billion, compared with $34.768 billion in the same period last year.

Research and development expenditures were $6,844 million compared to $5,758 million in the same period last year; Sales and marketing expenses were $5,679 million, compared to $5,779 million in the same period last year; General and administrative expenditures amounted to $2.337 billion, compared to $1.384 billion in the same period last year.

Operating profit was $20.399 billion, down 8% from $22.247 billion in the same period last year. Excluding US GAAP, it was down 3% from a year earlier.

Net income was $16.425 billion, down 12 percent from $18.765 billion a year earlier. Excluding GAAP, net income was $17.4bn, down 7 per cent from a year earlier.

Diluted earnings per share were $2.20, down 11% from a year earlier. On a non-GAAP basis, earnings per diluted share were $2.32, down 6 per cent from a year earlier.

In the second quarter, Microsoft returned $9.7 billion in cash to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividends, down 11 percent from a year earlier.
